Number of Private Cars on Dhaka City Roads Should Be Regulated
The number of private cars on Dhaka city roads has increased rapidly in recent years, creating serious problems for the city's transportation system. Although private cars provide comfort and convenience, their excessive use has become one of the major causes of traffic congestion, air pollution, fuel consumption and loss of valuable time.
Dhaka is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, but its roads and public transport facilities are not sufficient to meet the growing demand. A single private car often carries only one or two passengers while occupying considerable road space. As thousands of such cars move through the city every day, roads become heavily congested, especially during office and school hours. Long traffic jams cause commuters to spend several hours travelling short distances.
The growing number of private cars also contributes significantly to air and noise pollution. Vehicles release harmful gases and fine particles that worsen the quality of urban air. Moreover, frequent traffic congestion increases fuel consumption because vehicles remain idle for long periods. This not only wastes money but also increases dependence on imported fuel.
Experts and urban planners believe that the number and use of private cars should be regulated through effective government policies. Registration of new private cars could be controlled according to road capacity. Higher parking fees, congestion charges in busy areas and restrictions on car entry during peak hours could also discourage unnecessary car use. At the same time, people should be encouraged to use public transport.
However, regulation alone will not solve the problem. The government must first provide safe, affordable, comfortable and reliable public transportation. More buses, improved bus services, expanded metro rail facilities, pedestrian-friendly roads and better cycling infrastructure can encourage citizens to leave their private cars at home.
Dhaka needs a balanced and sustainable transportation policy. Private cars should not be completely banned, but their uncontrolled growth and unnecessary use should be restricted. If authorities take timely measures and citizens cooperate, traffic congestion and pollution can be reduced considerably. Regulating private cars, alongside improving public transport, is therefore essential for making Dhaka a cleaner, safer and more livable city.
