Air Pollution Intensifies Global Warming Abnormally

Dhaka, August 18, 2026: Air pollution, once regarded mainly as an urban health and environmental problem, has emerged as one of the most serious forces accelerating global warming. The thickening layer of smoke, dust and harmful gases over cities and industrial regions is not only making the air difficult to breathe but is also disturbing the Earth’s climate system. Scientists and environmental experts warn that the continued release of greenhouse gases and other pollutants is pushing global temperatures to abnormal levels and increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.

Air pollution is produced by a wide range of human activities. Factories, power plants, motor vehicles, construction work, brick kilns, agricultural burning and the uncontrolled burning of waste release enormous quantities of pollutants into the atmosphere. Among the most dangerous substances are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and fine particulate matter. Some of these pollutants directly contribute to the greenhouse effect, while others influence clouds, sunlight and atmospheric chemistry in complicated ways.

The greenhouse effect itself is a natural process that keeps the Earth warm enough to support life. However, human activities have dramatically increased the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide released from coal, oil and gas is the most important contributor to long-term human-caused warming. Methane, although present in smaller quantities, is particularly powerful at trapping heat. As these gases accumulate, they prevent some of the heat radiated from the Earth’s surface from escaping into space. The result is a steadily warming planet.

The connection between air pollution and climate change is therefore extremely important. Modern societies depend heavily on fossil fuels for electricity, transportation, manufacturing and heating. Whenever these fuels are burned, carbon dioxide and other pollutants are released. The problem becomes particularly severe in rapidly growing cities, where millions of vehicles operate daily and industrial activities are concentrated in relatively small areas.

Experts say that the consequences of this pollution can already be observed in many parts of the world. Global temperatures have risen significantly compared with the pre-industrial period, while heatwaves are becoming more frequent and severe. Long periods of unusually high temperatures can cause dehydration, heatstroke and other health problems, especially among children, elderly people and outdoor workers. At the same time, warmer conditions can contribute to drought in some regions while increasing heavy rainfall and flooding in others.

Air pollution also has a damaging relationship with forests and oceans, two of the planet’s most important natural systems for absorbing carbon dioxide. Forests remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis, while oceans absorb a large proportion of the carbon dioxide produced by human activities. However, deforestation, wildfires, rising temperatures and other environmental pressures are weakening these natural carbon sinks. When forests are destroyed or burned, the carbon stored in trees is released into the atmosphere, further intensifying warming.

Another major concern is the melting of glaciers and polar ice. Rising temperatures cause ice sheets and glaciers to shrink, contributing to sea-level rise. Melting ice also reduces the amount of sunlight reflected back into space. Darker land and ocean surfaces absorb more solar energy, creating a feedback loop that can contribute to further warming. Coastal communities are particularly vulnerable to this process because rising seas increase the risks of flooding, erosion and saltwater intrusion.

Pollution can also affect the climate in ways that are not immediately visible. Tiny particles suspended in the atmosphere, known as aerosols, can influence the amount of sunlight reaching the Earth’s surface and can affect cloud formation. Some aerosols have a temporary cooling effect, while others can contribute to warming or alter rainfall patterns. Black carbon, commonly known as soot, is especially concerning. Produced by incomplete combustion of fuels and biomass, it absorbs sunlight and warms the atmosphere. When deposited on snow and ice, it can darken their surfaces and accelerate melting.

The effects of worsening air pollution are not limited to the environment. Public health is suffering on a massive scale. Fine particulate matter can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, increasing the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. People living in heavily polluted cities may experience persistent coughing, breathing difficulties and irritation of the eyes and throat. Thus, the same activities that contribute to climate change can simultaneously create immediate health dangers.

Agriculture is another sector facing growing risks. Changes in temperature and rainfall can reduce crop yields, disrupt growing seasons and increase pressure from pests and diseases. 

Farmers who depend on predictable weather patterns are particularly vulnerable. In developing countries, where large populations depend directly on agriculture, climate-related losses can lead to higher food prices, unemployment and poverty. Water resources are also increasingly threatened as changing rainfall patterns, droughts and melting glaciers disrupt freshwater supplies.

The economic cost of pollution and climate change is enormous. Governments must spend more on healthcare, disaster recovery, flood protection and climate adaptation. Businesses face disruptions caused by extreme weather, damaged infrastructure and shortages of water or raw materials. Poor communities generally suffer the most because they have fewer resources to protect themselves from environmental disasters.

Environmentalists argue that the crisis cannot be solved through individual action alone. Governments, industries and international organizations must work together to reduce emissions and improve air quality. One of the most important steps is a rapid transition from fossil fuels to cleaner sources of energy such as solar, wind and other low-carbon technologies. Expanding public transportation, encouraging electric vehicles and improving fuel efficiency can also reduce pollution from the transport sector.

Industries must adopt cleaner production methods and modern pollution-control technologies. Governments should strictly enforce environmental regulations and monitor emissions from factories, power plants, vehicles and construction sites. The uncontrolled burning of plastic, household waste and agricultural residue should be discouraged through effective waste-management systems and practical alternatives.

Planting and protecting trees is another essential measure. Forest conservation can help remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while protecting biodiversity, soil and water resources. Urban authorities can create more parks, green belts and tree-lined streets to improve local air quality and reduce the urban heat-island effect. However, experts emphasize that planting trees cannot substitute for cutting greenhouse-gas emissions at their source.
Public awareness is equally important. Citizens can contribute by reducing unnecessary energy consumption, using public transport, avoiding open burning and supporting environmentally responsible products and policies. Schools and educational institutions can play a major role by teaching young people about air pollution, climate change and sustainable living.

International cooperation is indispensable because air pollution and climate change do not respect national borders. Emissions released in one country can influence atmospheric conditions far beyond its territory. Wealthier nations, which have historically produced a large share of global greenhouse-gas emissions, are also under pressure to support developing countries in adopting cleaner technologies and adapting to climate-related impacts.

The world is now facing a critical choice. Continuing to rely heavily on polluting fuels and environmentally destructive practices will increase the likelihood of dangerous climate change. On the other hand, cleaner energy, efficient transportation, responsible industrial development and strong environmental policies can improve both air quality and climate stability.

Air pollution and global warming are therefore not two separate crises. They are deeply connected consequences of the way modern societies produce energy, move people and goods, manufacture products and use natural resources. The abnormal warming of the planet is a warning that environmental limits are being pushed too far. Immediate and coordinated action is essential to protect human health, ecosystems and future generations.

The message from scientists and environmental experts is increasingly clear: cleaner air and a stable climate must be pursued together. Reducing pollution today will not only allow people to breathe healthier air but will also help slow the warming of the planet. The decisions made by governments, industries and citizens now will determine whether future generations inherit a healthier Earth or a world increasingly threatened by extreme heat, rising seas, polluted air and environmental instability.
