Farming and Fisheries Should Be Promoted Among Youths Across Bangladesh

Farming and fisheries have long been the backbone of Bangladesh's economy and rural life. However, many young people are increasingly moving away from agriculture and fishing because they consider these professions less profitable and less prestigious. To ensure food security, employment and sustainable economic growth, farming and fisheries should be actively promoted among the youth across the country.

Bangladesh has fertile land, numerous rivers, ponds, canals and a long coastline, providing excellent opportunities for both agriculture and fisheries. Yet many young people prefer jobs in cities or seek employment abroad. As a result, the agricultural sector is gradually facing challenges such as labour shortages, an ageing farming population and limited adoption of modern technology.

Experts believe that young people can transform agriculture and fisheries if they are given proper training, financial support and modern facilities. The government and private organizations should introduce practical training programmes on modern farming, aquaculture, fish processing, agricultural machinery and digital technologies. Young entrepreneurs should also receive easy loans, subsidies and other financial incentives to start agricultural and fisheries-based businesses.

Technology can make these sectors more attractive to the younger generation. Modern irrigation systems, drones, smart farming, improved seeds, artificial ponds and digital marketplaces can increase productivity and reduce costs. Similarly, modern aquaculture techniques, cold-storage facilities and improved fish-processing systems can create new employment opportunities and increase profits. Educational institutions can also play an important role. Agricultural and fisheries education should be connected with practical experience so that students can understand the commercial potential of these sectors. Successful young farmers and fish entrepreneurs can be presented as role models to encourage others.

Promoting farming and fisheries among youths is not merely an employment strategy; it is an investment in Bangladesh's future. A skilled and technology-oriented young generation can modernize rural economies, create jobs and strengthen national food security. Therefore, coordinated efforts from the government, educational institutions, banks and private organizations are essential.

If young people are encouraged to see farming and fisheries as modern, respectable and profitable professions, Bangladesh can unlock enormous economic potential. The future of these vital sectors depends greatly on empowering the youth today.
