Six more die with suspected measles symptoms
Six more people have died with measles symptoms in Bangladesh over a 24-hour period, while 72 new cases of the viral infection have been confirmed.
The deaths were reported in Dhaka, Barishal and Sylhet divisions, with two deaths recorded in each, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) bulletin issued on Tuesday.
The latest figures cover the 24-hour period from 8am on Sunday to 8am on Monday.
Since Mar 15, a total of 880 people have died with suspected measles symptoms across the country, while 99 deaths have been confirmed as measles-related.
Dhaka Division has recorded the highest number of deaths with suspected measles symptoms at 395, followed by Sylhet with 151.
The figures for other divisions are 92 in Rajshahi, 64 in Chattogram, 56 in Barishal, 74 in Mymensingh, 34 in Khulna and 14 in Rangpur.
In the latest 24-hour period, another 1,159 people with suspected measles symptoms sought treatment at hospitals across the country. Of them, 1,074 were admitted.
Dhaka Division recorded 347 admissions, followed by Chattogram with 291, Sylhet with 154, Barishal with 103, Khulna with 78, Mymensingh with 56, Rajshahi with 28 and Rangpur with 17.
The total number of patients admitted to hospitals with suspected measles symptoms since Mar 15 has reached 139,519, according to the DGHS. Of them, 134,458 have been discharged.
The number of suspected measles cases recorded nationwide has reached 159,150, while confirmed cases stand at 19,384.
The latest figures come amid a prolonged measles outbreak that has placed additional pressure on hospitals across the country, with health authorities continuing to monitor suspected and confirmed cases.
