Most Universities Lay Higher Emphasis on Business Studies Rather Than Advanced Sciences


A noticeable change has taken place in Bangladesh's higher education sector in recent years. Many universities and students appear to be placing greater emphasis on business studies than on science and technology-related disciplines. While business education is undoubtedly important for developing entrepreneurs, managers and professionals, the growing imbalance has raised concerns about the country's scientific and technological future.

Bangladesh is a developing country with a large young population and ambitious development goals. To achieve sustainable economic progress, the country needs not only business graduates but also scientists, engineers, researchers, doctors, technologists and innovators. Science and technology are essential for improving agriculture, healthcare, environmental protection, industrial production, energy security and digital infrastructure. Therefore, excessive preference for business studies may create difficulties for the country's long-term development.

One reason for the popularity of business studies is the perception that business graduates have wider and faster employment opportunities. Subjects such as accounting, finance, marketing and management are closely connected with banks, multinational companies, private organizations and entrepreneurship. Many students and parents consequently consider business education a practical route to a successful career. The expansion of Bangladesh's private-sector economy has further strengthened this perception.

Universities have also responded to market demand. Many private universities offer multiple programmes in business administration and related fields. Such programmes often attract large numbers of students because they are perceived as less expensive or less demanding in terms of laboratory facilities than science-based programmes. As a result, institutions may find business departments easier to expand than expensive science and engineering facilities.

Science education, however, requires substantial investment. Laboratories, modern equipment, research facilities and highly qualified teachers are necessary for quality scientific education. In many institutions, inadequate laboratory facilities and limited research opportunities discourage students from choosing science-related subjects. Talented students may therefore move toward business studies or seek educational opportunities abroad.
