The word 'scientist' exists because one extraordinary woman forced the world to rethink what science—and those who practice it—could be.
Think about the last time you used the word scientist. Maybe it was in a classroom, a news article, or while talking about space exploration or climate change. It feels like a word that has always existed. Surprisingly, it hasn't.
Before the 1830s, there was no single English word for someone who studied science. People were called "natural philosophers" or "men of science." But as scientific fields like astronomy, chemistry, physics and geology grew, those titles no longer fit. What finally inspired a new word wasn't any groundbreaking experiment—it was the work of an extraordinary woman named Mary Somerville.
Born in Scotland in 1780, Mary Somerville lived in a world where women were expected to learn music, sewing and household skills—not mathematics or astronomy. In fact, many people believed studying subjects like algebra would make women unsuitable wives or damage their minds. But Mary refused to accept those limits.
With little formal education, she taught herself mathematics by borrowing books and studying late at night. What began as curiosity soon turned into brilliance. She became so proficient in mathematics and astronomy that some of Europe's leading scientists admired her work.
Her breakthrough came in 1831 with “Mechanism of the Heavens”, a book that explained the complex mathematical ideas of French astronomer Pierre-Simon Laplace. It wasn't just a translation—it made one of the most difficult scientific works of the time understandable for advanced students, resulting in the book becoming an important textbook at the University of Cambridge.
And the irony is that Cambridge students could study Somerville’s book, but she herself could not study there. At the time, universities such as Cambridge did not admit women as degree students. She had produced work worthy of one of the world’s leading universities while being denied access to its classrooms simply because she was a woman.
Three years later, Somerville published another remarkable book, “On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences”. Instead of focusing on just one subject, she showed how astronomy, chemistry, physics, geology, electricity and mathematics were all connected. Today, interdisciplinary science is common, but in the early nineteenth century, this way of thinking was revolutionary.
When English philosopher William Whewell reviewed the book in 1834, he realised there was no suitable word for someone like Mary Somerville. She wasn't just an astronomer or a mathematician, and the term "man of science" clearly wasn't appropriate.
Whewell therefore introduced the new word: Scientist. Although he didn't actually call Mary Somerville a "scientist" in his review, her groundbreaking work was the reason the word first appeared in print. Every time we use the word today, we're unknowingly connected to her story.
Somerville’s influence didn't stop there. She wrote extensively about planetary motion, gravity, astronomy, and the laws governing the universe. In later editions of her work, she discussed the unexplained movements of Uranus and the possibility that another planet existed beyond it. Just a few years later, the planet “Neptune” was discovered through mathematical predictions, becoming one of the greatest achievements in astronomy. While she did not discover Neptune herself, her writing helped explain these revolutionary ideas to both scientists and the public.
Despite her achievements, Somerville spent much of her life overcoming barriers that had nothing to do with her ability. She could publish influential books, correspond with leading scientists, and gain international recognition, yet many educational and professional opportunities remained closed to women.
In 1835, however, she and astronomer Caroline Herschel became the first women to be elected Honorary Members of the Royal Astronomical Society—a remarkable achievement at a time when women were largely excluded from scientific institutions.
Today, Somerville is remembered as one of history's greatest science communicators. A college at the University of Oxford bears her name. Yet perhaps the greatest tribute is something far more familiar.
It is a single word: scientist. The next time we hear someone described as a scientist, remember that the word entered the English language because one woman's work challenged the way people thought about science itself. Mary Somerville proved that intelligence knows no gender, even when society insisted otherwise.
