Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Sunday said that the per capita public debt of Bangladesh stood at Tk 129,239.19 as of March 31, 2026.
While answering a question from Reza Ahmed MP at the Parliament on Sunday, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said, "The government is emphasising higher revenue collection, efficient management of public finances and more disciplined debt management to reduce the per capita debt burden."
The government is also taking steps to reduce its reliance on borrowing by increasing its own revenue, while seeking to lower financing requirements through more cost-effective and productive public spending and by curbing unnecessary expenditure, he said.
He said initiatives have been taken to develop the domestic debt market, broaden the investor base and make the government securities market more effective and competitive.
The government is also maintaining prescribed limits on additional borrowing through savings certificates, while taking steps to align their interest or profit rates with market conditions and prevailing interest rates, he said. Responding to a question from NCP MP Abdul Hannan Masud of Noakhali-6, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said that owners of loan-defaulting companies will face trial if involved in corruption, but their companies will not be shut down.
A company's legal identity is separate from its owner's, warning that closure would hurt employees, debt repayment and the economy, he said.
