Sophisticated Technologies Need to Be Utilized for Fishermen's Safety
Fishing is one of the most important sources of livelihood for millions of people in Bangladesh. From the rivers and haors to the Bay of Bengal, countless fishermen depend on fishing for their families' survival. However, fishing in Bangladesh remains a risky profession. Sudden storms, cyclones, rough waves, engine failures, poor communication systems, and inadequate safety equipment frequently put fishermen's lives in danger. Therefore, sophisticated technologies must be utilized to ensure their safety.
Bangladesh has a long coastline and a large maritime fishing community. Many fishermen travel far into the sea in small boats and fishing trawlers. They often face dangerous weather conditions without having reliable information about approaching storms. Although weather forecasts and cyclone warnings are available, the information does not always reach fishermen quickly or clearly.
Modern technology can significantly reduce these risks. GPS navigation systems can help fishermen determine their exact location and return safely to shore. Digital communication devices can maintain constant contact between fishing boats and coastal authorities. Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacons and other distress-alert systems can immediately transmit a vessel's location when an accident occurs.
Advanced weather-monitoring technology is equally important. Real-time satellite data, radar systems, and mobile-based weather alerts can provide fishermen with early warnings about cyclones, storms, and rough seas. Authorities should ensure that these warnings are communicated in simple language through mobile phones, radio, and other accessible platforms.
Fishing vessels should also be equipped with automatic identification systems, emergency radios, life jackets, life rafts, fire extinguishers, and other essential safety equipment. Solar-powered communication and tracking devices could be especially useful for small fishing boats because they can operate without depending entirely on conventional power sources.
Technology alone, however, cannot guarantee safety. Fishermen need proper training to use modern equipment effectively. Regular safety drills should be organized in coastal communities. Before going to sea, fishermen should receive information about weather conditions and emergency procedures. Boat owners should also be required to maintain vessels properly and provide adequate safety equipment.
