'Bangladesh has 191mn active SIMs'

Bangladesh has 191 million active mobile phone SIMs, Telecoms Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam says.

According to his figures, 108 million of them use 4G internet. The minister shared the figures at an event at Radisson Blu Water Garden Hotel in Dhaka on Monday, a ministry media statement said.

The event marked the opening of the 37th meeting of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity Wireless Group.

He said, "There are more than 49,000 4G sites, around 46,000 towers and 173,000 kilometres of fibre-optic network in the country."

The government's main goal is not only expanding connectivity but ensuring quality, affordability, reliability and meaningful connectivity, he said.

"Bangladesh must build its capabilities in future technologies, including AI, cybersecurity, software, hardware and 5G," he said.
