Sammilito Islami Bank begins deposit return, 6,000 customers get Tk 2.5bn on first day

Sammilito Islami Bank PLC, formed through the merger of five Shariah-based banks, has began returning principal amounts to customers who applied to withdraw on 1 September.

On the first day on Tuesday, a total of 6,000 customers collected Tk250 crore nationwide, against Tk1,329 crore sought by 18,000 applicants scheduled for repayment that day.

While 18,000 customers had applied to withdraw their deposits, only around 6,000 turned up to collect their money on Tuesday. The repayment process began after Bangladesh Bank provided the bank with Tk5,000 crore on 6 September to meet depositors' withdrawal demands. Eligible customers received their money, with bank officials welcoming them with flowers and sweets.

In addition to returning deposits, the bank also began online fund transfers on Monday. As a result, the operations of Sammilito Islami Bank have gained some momentum after a long period.

First Security Islami Bank, Social Islami Bank, Union Bank, Global Islami Bank and EXIM Bank were merged to form Sammilito Islami Bank. The former interim government initiated the move.

Although Sammilito Islami Bank has been formed, the branches of the five banks are still being operated separately. The five merged banks have a total of 761 branches across the country.
