HC orders Dr. Yunus to pay BDT 666 crore to NBR
The High Court has ordered Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to immediate past interim government, to pay BDT 666 crore to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) in connection with a tax dispute involving Grameen Kalyan, an organization associated with the Nobel laureate’s Grameen network.
A High Court bench headed by Justice Mujibur Rahman Mia handed down the verdict on Thursday, ruling that Grameen Kalyan must pay the amount to the NBR in accordance with the tax authority’s requirements and applicable guidelines. The court’s decision comes after a prolonged legal dispute over the organization’s tax obligations.
According to the verdict, the tax liability relates to assessments made by the NBR concerning Grameen Kalyan. The organization had challenged the tax demands through legal proceedings, arguing against the revenue authority’s position. The High Court, however, upheld the NBR’s demand and directed payment of the outstanding amount.
The ruling places a significant financial obligation on Grameen Kalyan and adds to the legal and financial challenges facing Dr. Yunus and organizations linked to him. Dr. Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and founder of the Grameen Bank model, has been involved in several legal and regulatory disputes in Bangladesh in recent years.
