Playgrounds Across Bangladesh Need Repairs and Maintenance

Playgrounds across Bangladesh are increasingly falling into disrepair, creating serious concerns for children and young people who depend on these spaces for recreation, physical exercise and social development. In many schools, residential areas and public parks, playgrounds are poorly maintained, with broken equipment, uneven surfaces, waterlogging, accumulated waste and damaged boundary walls making them unsafe for regular use.

A playground is much more than an open piece of land. It provides children with an opportunity to play, exercise and develop teamwork, discipline and leadership skills. Regular physical activity also contributes to better physical and mental health. However, the shortage of safe and well-maintained playgrounds is forcing many children to spend more time indoors, often using mobile phones, computers and other electronic devices for entertainment.

In Dhaka and other major cities, the problem is particularly serious because rapid urbanisation has reduced the availability of open spaces. Many existing playgrounds are sometimes occupied by temporary markets, fairs, parking facilities or other activities. As a result, children often have limited access to suitable places for sports and recreation.

Parents and local residents say that playgrounds require regular inspection and maintenance rather than occasional repairs. Broken swings, goalposts, benches and other facilities should be replaced promptly. Grass and trees should be properly maintained, while drainage systems need improvement to prevent waterlogging during the rainy season. Cleanliness should also be ensured so that playgrounds remain hygienic and welcoming.

Schools have an important role to play in protecting their playgrounds. School authorities, local government bodies and community organizations should work together to develop maintenance plans. Adequate funds should be allocated for repairing damaged facilities and ensuring regular cleaning and security. Local communities can also help by preventing littering, vandalism and illegal occupation of playgrounds.

Experts believe that protecting playgrounds should be considered an investment in the country's future. Children who have access to safe recreational spaces are more likely to develop healthy lifestyles and positive social habits. Properly maintained playgrounds can also encourage young people to participate in football, cricket, athletics and other sports, helping Bangladesh discover future athletes.

The authorities should therefore take immediate steps to survey playgrounds across the country and identify those requiring urgent repairs. New recreational spaces should also be created, especially in densely populated urban areas.
