Dengue claims six more lives
'Situation may worsen in coming months'
When Bangladesh has been struggling for long due to measles outbreak, dengue has now become another public health concern as the mosquito-borne disease claimed another six lives in 24 hours till 8am on Sunday.
1,561 new patients were hospitalized across the country during the time and the death toll has now stood at 149 this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The ongoing dengue situation can take a more alarming turn over the coming months, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku said on Sunday.
While exchanging views with lawmakers and administration at the Dhaka Deputy Commissioner's conference room, Tuku said, "The risk of dengue may increase further in the coming months, so everyone needs to become aware from now."
Of the six deaths recorded during the latest 24-hour period, two were reported in Chattogram Division, two in Khulna Division, and one each in Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions.
Meanwhile, 1,394 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals during the period, taking the total number of recoveries this year to 48,093.
The cumulative number of dengue cases reported nationwide has now reached 51,837, according to DGHS data.
Health experts call for a comprehensive mosquito-control programme alongside individual preventive measures.
