The Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI)was awarded the prestigious ISSCA Global Award 2026 in the 'Crop Developmentand Production Technology' category at the Dryland Congress 2026, held in NewDelhi, India. The event was organized by the International Crops ResearchInstitute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and the Centre of Excellence forSouth-South Cooperation in Agriculture (ISSCA). The award was presented inrecognition of BARI’s innovative variety, "BARI Chinabadam-9" (aBangladeshi groundnut variety).
BARI Chinabadam-9 was selected from among competitivenominations across the Global South (developing nations) for its role inimproving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. Capable of withstandingadverse environmental conditions, this local variety has made significantcontributions to boosting agricultural productivity, strengthening foodsecurity, and enhancing climate resilience for farmers in dryland regions. TheISSCA Global Awards recognize proven agricultural innovations that offerpotential for widespread adoption and application in other countries. As ascience-based crop development achievement, BARI Chinabadam-9 directly empowersmarginalized farming communities facing climate and soil-related challenges. BARI Director General Dr. Md. ManjurulKadir stated,"This award symbolizes the excellence of our research. BARI Chinabadam-9has demonstrated that agricultural research tailored to local needs cantransform productivity in dryland regions. This recognition highlights Bangladesh's growingcontribution to South-South cooperation (mutual assistance among developingnations) and demonstrates how national agricultural research systems can shareviable solutions across developing regions. The Bangladesh AgriculturalResearch Institute (BARI) is the country's largest multi-crop researchinstitution. It conducts research on more than 212 crops, including tubercrops, pulses, oilseeds, vegetables, fruits, and spices.
