'India will protect its interests': Delhi reacts as Dhaka reviewing 101 pacts
India will take 'necessary actions' to protect its interests if Bangladesh decides to review or alter agreements signed between the two countries, Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
While responding to a query during a bi-weekly press briefing on Friday, Jaiswal said, "We have also seen some media reports on this matter, but nothing has been conveyed to us officially. Obviously, India will take all necessary actions to protect its interests."
Bangladesh Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni said on 11 September that the government was reviewing 101 agreements and memorandums of understanding signed with India during the Awami League government to determine whether any provisions were against Bangladesh's interests.
Moni said the government wants to maintain friendly relations with neighbouring India while giving the highest priority to Bangladesh's national interests first.
Responding to a separate query on the impending expiration of the 30-year Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, Jaiswal clarified that institutional mechanisms between the two neighbouring nations remain functional.
The India-Bangladesh Ganga Water Sharing Treaty, signed on December 12, 1996, is set to expire in December 2026.
Earlier in August, Jaiswal said that India-Bangladesh discussions on the Teesta and other shared water issues will continue through the bilateral Joint Rivers Commission and established structured dialogue mechanisms, while underlining that New Delhi's position on the Teesta River project has already been conveyed to Dhaka.
