Police ramp up security at Dhaka gateways
Police have stepped up searches and patrols across Dhaka following a series of crude bomb explosions and a bus fire in the capital.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said on Saturday that checkpoints had been set up at key locations, including the main entry points to the city, as part of "special security measures".
At least eight crude bomb explosions were reported in different parts of Dhaka between Friday afternoon and night, including one in front of Jatrabari Police Station, bdnews24 reports.
A bus was also set on fire in front of Kafrul Police Station later in the evening.
The DMP said the additional measures were aimed at maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety.
Police have increased surveillance on major roads, at important intersections and at the city's main entry points.
"All types of suspicious vehicles, including motorcycles, are being thoroughly searched to prevent any form of disorder or criminal activity," the DMP said.
"Special operations are continuing across the capital to maintain law and order."
Police said they had also strengthened picket duties and significantly increased mobile, foot and motorcycle patrols across Dhaka.
Teams from the Detective Branch (DB), Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) and Armed Police Battalion (APBn) have also been deployed to prevent major crimes or acts of sabotage.
