Measles: Five more deaths, 1,105 cases
Another five people have died with suspected measles symptoms in Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Since March 15, 980 people have died after developing symptoms associated with measles, government figures show. Another 101 people have died after testing positive for measles. That brings the number of deaths linked to measles or suspected measles symptoms to 1,081 over nearly six months. Most of those who died were children.
Dhaka Division has recorded the highest number of deaths among people with suspected measles symptoms, at 442, followed by Sylhet with 172.
Rajshahi has recorded 93 such deaths, Mymensingh and Chattogram 78 each, Barishal 60, Khulna 42 and Rangpur 15.
According to the DGHS bulletin issued on Thursday, 1,183 people with measles symptoms sought treatment at hospitals across the country in the 24 hours to 8am on Wednesday. Of them, 1,105 were admitted.
Dhaka Division accounted for 371 admissions, followed by Chattogram with 243, Sylhet 155, Barishal 124, Khulna 109, Mymensingh 72, Rajshahi 28 and Rangpur nine.
The number of people admitted to hospitals with suspected measles symptoms has reached 163,153, of whom 156,744 have been discharged.
The total number of people reported with measles symptoms has reached 184,632, while 20,951 people have tested positive for measles.
Of those, 100 were diagnosed in the latest 34-hour period.
Not everyone who seeks hospital treatment or remains outside hospitals is tested for measles, meaning the actual number of confirmed cases cannot be determined.
