Three die with measles symptoms
Three more people have died with suspected measles symptoms in Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Another 64 people have tested positive for the highly contagious disease. Since Mar 15, 983 people have died after developing symptoms associated with measles, government figures show. Another 101 people have died after testing positive for measles.
That brings the number of deaths linked to measles or suspected measles symptoms to 1,084 over nearly six months. Most of those who died were children.
Dhaka Division has recorded the highest number of deaths among people with suspected measles symptoms, at 443, followed by Sylhet with 173.
Rajshahi has recorded 93 such deaths, Mymensingh and Chattogram 78 each, Barishal 60, Khulna 43 and Rangpur 15.
According to the DGHS bulletin issued on Friday, 1,201 people with measles symptoms sought treatment at hospitals across the country in the 24 hours to 8am. Of them, 1,095 were admitted.
Dhaka Division accounted for 350 admissions, followed by Chattogram with 266, Sylhet 162, Barishal 100, Khulna 105, Mymensingh 56, Rajshahi 43, and Rangpur 13.
The number of people admitted to hospitals with suspected measles symptoms has reached 164,248, of whom 157,807 have been discharged.
The total number of people reported with measles symptoms has reached 185,833, while 21,015 people have tested positive for measles.
Not everyone who seeks hospital treatment or remains outside hospitals is tested for measles, meaning the actual number of confirmed cases cannot be determined.
