Nine more with measles symptoms die
At least nine people with measles symptoms have died across Bangladesh in the last 24 hours. During the same period, 1,155 people with measles symptoms have been admitted to hospitals, while 113 people tested positive for measles. With this, the number of deaths of patients with measles symptoms has risen to 995 so far this year. A total of 196 people died after being confirmed to have measles.
According to a bulletin issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Sunday, four people died in Dhaka Division, two in Sylhet, two in Chattogram and one in Mymensingh in the 24 hours from 8am Saturday.
Of the total deaths involving measles symptoms, the highest number, 448, was recorded in Dhaka Division.
Sylhet follows with 175 deaths. Rajshahi has recorded 93 deaths, Mymensingh 79, Chattogram 81, Barishal 60, Khulna 44 and Rangpur 15.
The bulletin also said 1,228 patients with measles symptoms arrived at hospitals in different parts of the country in one day. Of them, 1,155 were admitted.
Among the newly admitted patients with measles symptoms, 309 were in Dhaka Division, 313 in Chattogram, 153 in Sylhet, 127 in Barishal, 93 in Khulna, 96 in Mymensingh, 28 in Rajshahi and 36 in Rangpur.
The DGHS has been keeping records of measles cases, suspected cases and deaths since Mar 15.
Not all patients who come to hospitals, or those who remain outside hospitals, are tested for measles. As a result, the exact number of people diagnosed with measles cannot be determined. The data only cover patients who seek treatment at or are admitted to hospitals.
