CPB hits out at government over rising crime wave
The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) has launched a stinging critique of the government over the nation's deteriorating law and order, declaring that state inaction has plunged citizens into a "horrifying" climate of fear and insecurity.
In a joint statement released in Dhaka on Monday, CPB President Kazi Sajjad Zahir Chandan and General Secretary Abdullah Kafi Ratan warned that without an immediate, uncompromising self-evaluation by ruling authorities, the general public will continue to bear the brunt of lawlessness.
The leftist leadership demanded a swift, heavy-handed crackdown on organized violent syndicates, extortionists, and land grabbers. They urged authorities to ensure rapid, transparent prosecutions for grave offenses-including murder, rape, and robbery-demanding that the government hold its own party affiliates accountable to demonstrate genuine intent.
The opposition party further accused law enforcement of complicity in political violence, alleging that police have collaborated with ruling party activists to raid political offices, vandalize venues, and conduct sweeping mass arrests against legitimate, non-banned opposition figures under the guise of security operations.
Detailing recent high-profile incidents, the CPB highlighted a late-night assault in Dhaka's Mirpur district, where heavy machinery was deployed to loot and demolish a community healthcare facility providing maternal and child vaccinations to low-income families. Pointing to reported allegations implicating a sitting Member of Parliament, the CPB criticized local police for allegedly aiding the perpetrators or standing idly by.
The statement also condemned a recent police raid on the central office of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASD), which resulted in the detention of 289 representatives gathered from across the country. CPB officials labeled the police actions and the involvement of political hooligans as a direct assault on democratic norms.
Warning that arbitrary political harassment and state overreach undermine the nation's democratic foundation, the CPB called on the state to guarantee equal constitutional rights, civil liberties, and freedom of assembly for all political entities under a single, fair standard.
