Metro Rail Needs More Compartments Considering Dhaka City Population
The introduction of metro rail has brought a new dimension to public transportation in Dhaka. It has reduced travel time for many commuters and provided a modern alternative to the city's crowded roads. However, with Dhaka's rapidly growing population and increasing dependence on metro rail, passengers are frequently facing overcrowding, especially during office hours. Considering the huge population of the capital, authorities should take effective measures to increase the number of compartments and improve the overall capacity of the metro rail service.
Every day, thousands of people use public transport to travel to offices, educational institutions, hospitals, markets, and other destinations. Dhaka's roads are often heavily congested, making journeys long and exhausting. As a result, many commuters prefer metro rail because it can provide faster and more predictable travel. However, the increasing number of passengers is putting considerable pressure on the existing metro rail system.
During peak hours, passengers often have to wait for several trains before they can enter a compartment. Once inside, many coaches become extremely crowded, leaving little space for comfortable movement. Elderly people, children, persons with disabilities, and women may face particular difficulties in such situations. Overcrowding can also create discomfort and raise concerns about passenger safety.
Increasing the number of compartments could help address this problem by allowing more passengers to travel on each train. If technically and operationally possible, longer trains could carry a larger number of commuters at a time. Additional trains during peak periods could also reduce waiting times and distribute passengers more evenly. Authorities should conduct detailed studies of passenger numbers and travel patterns before making decisions about expanding capacity.
The need for improved capacity is also connected with the broader transportation challenges of Dhaka. A reliable metro rail system can encourage people to use public transportation instead of private cars, potentially helping to reduce road congestion and unnecessary fuel consumption. However, for this to happen effectively, the service must be convenient, sufficiently spacious, and reliable.
Alongside adding compartments, authorities should consider improving station facilities, passenger management, ticketing systems, and connections with buses and other modes of transportation. Better coordination among different forms of public transport could make daily journeys easier for commuters.
Dhaka needs a public transportation system that can keep pace with its growing population. Metro rail has already become an important part of the city's transport network, but its capacity must continue to develop according to public demand. Increasing the number of compartments, where feasible, along with running additional trains during busy periods, could provide much-needed relief to commuters. A well-planned expansion of metro rail capacity would not only make daily travel more comfortable but also contribute to a more efficient, accessible, and sustainable transportation system for the people of Dhaka.
