Eight more die with measles symptoms

Bangladesh has recorded eight more suspected measles deaths in a 24-hour count.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said 43 people tested positive for measles during the period.

The latest fatalities bring the total number of suspected measles-related deaths this year to 1,020. Laboratory testing has confirmed measles in a further 102 deaths, bringing the overall toll to 1,122, according to news agencies.

According to the DGHS bulletin released on Saturday, the Dhaka Division saw the highest number of suspected measles deaths, accounting for 463 fatalities, followed by Sylhet with 179 deaths, Rajshahi with 93, Mymensingh with 80, Chattogram with 86, Barishal with 60, Khulna with 44, and Rangpur with 15.

In all, 1,013 people sought hospital care for measles symptoms during the period, with 1,003 admitted.

Hospital admissions have reached 173,024, while 167,756 patients have been discharged.

Suspected measles cases total 195,197, including 21,666 confirmed cases.

Public health experts link the resurgence to gaps in previous vaccination coverage and shortcomings

in hospital and patient management, including delays in detecting infected children and isolating them at home.

Public health expert Mushtuq Husain said children generally need three to four weeks after vaccination to develop sufficient immunity. "Therefore, the current wave of infections, hospitalisations and deaths may continue for at least another month," he added.
