Juvenile delinquency has become a growing concern in Bangladesh. In recent years, incidents involving minors in theft, drug abuse, violence, bullying, and other unlawful activities have raised serious questions about family responsibility, education, and social values. Although poverty, peer pressure, unemployment, and the influence of social media can contribute to such behavior, proper parental guidance plays a vital role in preventing children from becoming involved in criminal activities. Therefore, parents must take greater responsibility for raising their children with care, discipline, and moral values.
Juvenile delinquency refers to unlawful or antisocial behavior committed by children and adolescents. In Bangladesh, several factors may push young people toward such behavior. Family conflict, neglect, domestic violence, poverty, and a lack of emotional support can make children vulnerable to harmful influences. Moreover, excessive exposure to violent online content, negative peer pressure, and drug-related activities can increase the risk of misconduct.
In many families, both parents remain busy with work and household responsibilities, leaving limited time for meaningful communication with their children. Some parents also rely on harsh punishment rather than understanding their children's emotional needs. Such approaches may create resentment, fear, or behavioral problems instead of encouraging responsible conduct.
Parents are a child's first teachers. Their behavior, attitudes, and values strongly influence children's personalities and decisions. By maintaining a friendly relationship with their children, parents can understand their problems, fears, and aspirations. Regular communication helps children feel valued and makes them more willing to share difficulties before those problems become serious.
Parents should teach honesty, respect, empathy, self-discipline, and responsibility from an early age. They should monitor their children's friendships, school attendance, online activities, and use of free time without violating their privacy unnecessarily. Encouraging participation in sports, cultural activities, reading, and community service can also help young people develop positive habits.
Furthermore, parents should avoid physical and emotional abuse. Instead, they should use reasonable boundaries, consistent discipline, and constructive discussion to correct undesirable behavior.
Parental guidance alone cannot eliminate juvenile delinquency. Schools, community organizations, social workers, and government agencies must also contribute. Educational institutions should provide counseling, promote moral education, and identify students who need additional support.
