The chronic shortage of public transportation in Dhaka has become a major concern for millions of city dwellers who struggle to reach their workplaces, educational institutions and other destinations every day. Despite being the capital and largest economic center of Bangladesh, Dhaka continues to experience serious deficiencies in its public transport system. The growing gap between the demand for transportation and the availability of buses and other public vehicles has made daily commuting increasingly difficult and frustrating.
Every morning, thousands of people gather at bus stops hoping to find an available vehicle. Long queues, overcrowded buses and prolonged waiting periods have become familiar scenes across the metropolitan area. Office employees, students, factory workers and low-income people are among those who suffer most from this situation. Many passengers are compelled to travel in overcrowded vehicles or spend additional money on expensive alternatives to avoid being late.
The problem becomes particularly severe during morning and evening rush hours. Although Dhaka has introduced the Mass Rapid Transit system through its metro rail service, its coverage remains limited compared with the transportation needs of the entire metropolitan population. Consequently, buses continue to play an indispensable role in carrying the majority of ordinary commuters.
Several factors contribute to the public transport crisis. Rapid urbanization, population growth, inadequate transport planning, traffic congestion and insufficient numbers of properly managed buses have intensified the problem. Moreover, irregular bus services and competition among operators often create additional difficulties for passengers.
Women, elderly citizens, children and people with disabilities face particular challenges when public transportation is overcrowded or unavailable. Many passengers also experience uncertainty about bus schedules and routes. These difficulties reduce productivity and negatively affect people's quality of life.
The government and relevant authorities must take immediate measures to improve the situation. Increasing the number of reliable buses, introducing organized route management and ensuring regular services should receive priority. Strict monitoring is necessary to prevent arbitrary fare increases and improve passenger safety. Authorities should also expand metro rail connectivity and strengthen the integration of different transportation systems.
Public transportation is not a luxury; it is an essential urban service. Dhaka cannot function efficiently when millions of residents struggle to travel from one place to another. A well-planned and dependable transport network would reduce commuting difficulties and support economic activities.
