AA: How will you define poem?
Stalin: There is no orthodox definition of a poem. Many wanted to answer this question. Robert Frost said, 'Poetry is hard to understand but easy to love.'
The father of Poet Yeat gave an exclusive definition, Social Contract of a solitary person. Recently an Americal poet Alex Hally said, poetry is the synonym of anger and dream. But I think, the quantity of bravery is the quantity of art and the quantity of art is poetry.
AA: Do you remember your first poetry? What was your subject of that poem?
Stalin: I was a student of class five. My mother Ayesha Sarder was the Assistant Editor of 'Shatodol' magazine. Moshiul Alam was the Executive Editor of that magazine. My mother told me so many have been writing a poem, write a poem.
That was my first attempt to write a poem inspired by my mother. I wrote a poem 'Shapoth/Oath'.
As the flowers dedicate
its life for human service,
lets dedicate our lives for
the service of our country.
There was no specific instruction for the subject. I choose the dream of the people of this country for freedom. The subject of my poetry was country and till now it is the same.
AA: When the poetry is truly a poetry and when not?
Stalin: A poem is never a complete. It is a continuous process of being poetry for all life. Jibonanda Das said, all are not a poet, but some are poets. But when the reader accepts the poetry then the creator is a poet. The contemporary readers might not accept poetry. But the next generation remembers the poet and poetry.
Jibonanda Das in this country and French poet Rabo experience of rejection by the contemporary readers. I say everyone is a poet but some are not. The reader will recognize the poetry and poet.
The logical answer would be given by the example of Heraclitus' change of river. None can bath twice in the same river. Water flows and the river changes its nature every nano second. A reader also reads a book but he reads another book after a while. The reader of today will be replaced by the reader of tomorrow.
AA: Do you read the poetry of youths? Which poetry attracts you most?
Stalin: I read the poetry of contemporary poets and the previous poets. I have a grave attraction to the classical literature. You know, I have a notion for the history and mythical literature. I like those poetry which depicts the simple and true picture of life with innovative and aesthetically.
AA: How do you compare the world poetry and the poetry of Bangladesh?
Stalin: Bangla Rabindra Nath Tagore is the great example. Nazrul, Jibonanda, Jashimuddin, Shamsur Rahman, AL Mahmud, Shahid Kadri have written poetry of international level.
AA: How do you observe the future of our poetry?
Stalin: The future of our poetry is at the hands of our youths. If they can take the poetry to the door of readers, it will ensure the future of our poetry. I am optimistic always on this issue.
AA: How do you see the achievement after Liberation?
Stalin: The liberation war has not finished yet. The economical and political freedom have not yet achieved fully. The enemies of our liberation are active till now. We must be careful about IMF, World Bank.
AA: How do you judge sexual or nude words which are being used in poetry?
Stalin: This is not bad. In poetry, some nude words may come. But these words should not be used to stimulate reader's sexual excitement.
AA: Thank you very much.
Stalin: I like to read different interviews. Thank you for taking mine. I will read this one as well.
