New EC must be accepted: Emajuddin

New EC must be accepted: Emajuddin

Pro-BNP intellectual Professor Emajuddin Ahamed has said that all should accept the Election Commission (EC) constituted by the President. Prof Emajuddin made this remark in a function in Brahmanbaria yesterday amid protest of BNP over the newly-appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).

The convener of the pro-BNP professional  organization 'Shoto Nagorik Committee' Prof Uddin said: "It is different matters what BNP or other parties will say about the newly-formed election commission. As this commission has been announced by the President, it should be accepted. There is no reason to differ in this matter."

The election commission constituted by President Abdul Hamid from 10 names recommend by the search committee include KM Nurul Huda as Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and former secretary Rafiqul Islam, former additional secretary Mahbub Talukder, retired district and sessions judge Kabita Khanam and retired brigadier general Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury as commissioners.

BNP leaders claimed KM Nurul was among the administrative officials who joined the 'Janatar Mancha' formed in Dhaka during the movement of Awami League in 1996. But Nurul Huda denied this claim saying this statement of BNP is their 'political strategy'.

Though the eminent political scientist Emajuddin kept the election commissioners including the chief election commissioner above controversies, he warned that this commission must earn the faith of people.

He said: "There is an ordeal before the newly-formed election commission to hold a free, fair and credible election. The commission must pass this test and make efforts from very now to become successful. The only way before them is to be faithful to people."
