Church guard hacked in Pabna

Church guard hacked in Pabna Saint Rita Catholic Church at Mathurapur in Chatmohor of Pabna where the night guard Gilbert Kosta was hacked by miscreants yesterday. -AA

A security guard of a local Catholic church was stabbed and seriously wounded by miscreants at Mathurapur Church Gate in Chatmohor upazila in district early Friday. The victim was identified as Gilbert Kosta, 65, son of Late Joseph Kosta hailing from Lautia village under Haripur Union of the upazila.

SM Ahsan Habib, officer-in-charge of Chatmohor Police Station, said a group of miscreants swooped on the guard around 2:45am and stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured. The younger brother of the victim Bakul Kosta said Gilbert Kosta was performing his duty as the

night guard at Mathurapur Catholic church. Some miscreants entered into the church climbing over the boundary wall at dead of night. As Gilbert intercepted them, they hacked him indiscriminately and fled away. Hearing screams of Gilbert, locals recovered him.

He was taken to Pabna GeneralHospital with several injury marks, said police. On the basis of the information of the injured Gilbert, police conducted raid that night and arrested three persons Rajib Hossain, 18, Murad Hossain, 17 and Farid Hossain, 18 of Lautia village for their alleged involvement in the attack from the area.

Quoting the victim, police said he had an altercation with some local youths over a trifling matter. Police suspected that the guard might have been attacked over the issue. Pabna Police Super Jihadul Kabir, additional police super Goutam Kumar Biswas, additional police super (special branch) Shamima Akter along with officials of Rab and detective branch visited the spot. They assured to take stern action in this regard.
