Salute to the brave hero High officials of Bangladesh army and relatives paying last respect to slain RAB intelligence wing chief Abul Kalam Azad yesterday at Military Graveyard in the capital. -Jahidul Islam

Lt Col Abul Kalam Azad, the chief of the intelligence wing of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) who died from injuries he received in a blast in Sylhet on March 25, was laid to eternal rest on Friday afternoon.

He was buried at Banani Military Graveyard around 4:45pm following 2nd namaz-e-janaza at the RAB headquarters. Earlier, his 1st janaza was held at Bangladesh Army Central Mosque after Juma prayers. Azad, Director (Intelligence) of the elite force, breathed his last at Combined Military Hosp-ital (CMH) in Dhaka around 12:05 am on Friday.

Meanwhile, the autopsy on the body of the RAB official was held at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the morning. Dr Sohel Mahmud, head of the DMCH Forensic Department who conducted the autopsy, said Azad died due to the blast and a splinter of a bomb was found in his brain.

The splinter penetrated into brain through his left eye, he said. Six people, including two policemen,  were killed and 40 others, including Azad and one of his fellows, injured in two bomb blasts near the suspected militant den at Shibbari in South Surma upazila of Shylhet on March 25 during an Army-led operation there.

Both of the RAB officials were first airlifted to the CMH in Dhaka. Later, Azad was flown to Singapore on March 26 for better treatment. However, he was brought back home on Wednesday and admitted to the CMH.
