Qawmi education recognized

PM 'dislikes' statue at Supreme Court

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday declared the recognition of certificates of Dawrae Hadith under Qawmi Madrasa Education Board as equivalent to Masters Degree in Islamic Studies and Arabic.

Sheikh Hasina made the announcement at a meeting with the ulemas of the Qawmi Madrasas at Gonobhaban in the city last night. The recognition was given on the basis of basic principles of Darul Ulum Deobandh of India and maintaining separate characteristics of the Qawmi Madrasas, she said.

During the meeting, Sheikh Hasina said she also 'dislikes' the statue at the Supreme Court premises, agreeing with Islamist hardliners who want it removed.  A meeting will be held with the chief justice over the statue, she told a gathering of Qawmi Madrassa representatives yesterday evening, reports bdnews24.com.

Hardliners say the figure, a variation on the Greek goddess Themis but in a saree, goes against Islam.According to them, the statue erected in December 2016, holding the familiar sword and scales of justice in her hands, amounts to idolatry.

"I don't like it myself. It's being called a Greek statue, but how will a Greek statue get here?" "The Greeks had a certain kind of attire. But there is a saree on this one. That too is ridiculous."

"I'll sit for talks with the chief justice over this very soon. So I'll ask you to be patient and not agitate. We'll do everything here possible," she said.

Chairman of Qawmi Madrasa Education Board-BEFAQ and Director General of Hathazari Darul Ulum Madrasa Allama Ahmed Shafi, President of the National Dinis Education Board Moulana Fariduddin, Vice Chairman of Qawmi Madrasa Education Board Moulana Ashraf Ali, Acting Secretary General of the board Moulana Abdul Quddus, Ittehadul Madarisil Qoumia, Chittagong Moulana Abdul Halim Bokhari and assistant Vice President of Befaqul Madarisil Arabia Bangladesh Moulana Noor Hossain Quasemi also spoke on the occasion.
