Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was one of the jubilant Tigers fans waving the red and green flag in the stands when the Bangla-desh cricket team clinched its first-ever Test win against Australia in Dhaka.
The Aussies were defeated by 20 runs on Wednesday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the first of a two-match Test series.
Prime Minister's press secretary Ihsanul Karim said Sheikh Hasina personally congratulated the squad, coaches and officials. "She called the win an Eid gift for the people of the country." Sheikh Hasina arrived at the stadium with her grandson after the lunch break on Day 4, when Australia was seven wickets down.
As Taijul took Hazlewood's wicket and sealed the victory the prime minister jumped out of her seat and took the Bangladesh flag handed to her by Bangladesh Cricket Board Chairman Nazmul Hassan. And, as a jubilant Hasina waved the flag, the stadium filled with the sound of thousands of cheering fans.
