Bangladesh Bank donated medical instruments of a massive sum of money to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in 2014 to upgrade the department with sophisticated machineries and more effective services for better treatment of burn victims.

Being inspired by this beneficial step by Bangladesh Bank, some commercial banks also donated considerable amounts of money to DMCH burn unit for its modernization.

Bangladesh Bank's governor of that time Dr. Atiur Rahman played significant roles for this donation which was a splendid humanitarian instance. During 2013 and 2014 there was countrywide violence instigated by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat and Hefazat-E-Islam in which hundreds of people fell victims to petrol bombs and other forms of terrorist attacks. At that time most of these victims were admitted in the burn unit of DMCH. DMCH is still viewed by people with burn wounds as the last resort for hope.

Doctors and staffs of DMCH burn unit also had their confidence boosted up when these instruments were donated by Bangladesh Bank and other organizations. Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank SK Sur Chowdhury also participated in this philanthropic act by the country's central bank while credit also goes to Dr. Samanta Lal Sen as well, the founder of burn and plastic surgery unit of DMCH for his dynamic work in this regard.

The burn unit of DMCH is now in much better shape which has been providing medical services to lots of patients with burn injuries from different parts of Bangladesh. Under the monitoring of Dr. Samanta Lal Sen burn units have been set up in medical  colleges of Sylhet, Chittagong, Rangpur, Barisal, Mymensingh, Comilla and Rajshahi.

The humanistic roles played by Dr. Atiur Rahman and SK Sur Chowdhury are brilliant examples of corporate social service which should be followed by reputed organizations for the betterment of the country's people, civil society members have expressed this opinion.

In this context Dr. Atiur Rahman said to The Asian Age, When I observed people's sufferings in burn unit due to lack of instruments, I decided to do something. This is how Bangladesh Bank donated 50 lakh taka worth of machineries in 2014.

At that time I requested some other banks to extend their helping hands for supporting the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Different organizations should come up with financial aid for the welfare of people all over the country.

Bangladesh Bank's Deputy Governor SK Sur Chowdhury told The Asian Age, Bangladesh Bank still retains the spirit with which we provided instruments to the burn unit. All firms should get involved with humanitarian activities.

On the other hand, Dr. Samanta Lal Sen said to The Asian Age, Several banks and other organizations accorded financial assistance for the burn unit of DMCH.

A high quality burn institute is being established. When it is completed, patients will hopefully receive highly developed treatment. People will no longer have to go abroad for treatment with burn injuries. Rather we will be able to treat foreign patients at our own hospital.
